Cheap printer or cheap ink?
Purchasing a printer today can be very confusing even for a computer engineer. I purchased a new epson C60 printer last year. One of the newest revenue streams for printer manufactures is the ink. The new ink cartridges that come with your new printer are usually half full. The cost of ink should have gone down with all the ways to refill your cartridges for cheap.

But there is the catch, it is much more difficult to refill your ink cartridges with the new printers due to microchips that have been put on the cartridges. It is not impossible to refill the catridges, but it is quite a bit more difficult. You must obtain a chip resetter. They cost between $25 and $50 dollars. The chip resetter resets the chip on the ink cartridge to tell it that the cartridge is full. One can then use generic inks purchase at bulk prices to refill the cartridge.

I can remeber my first injet printer. It had color, but you had to swap out the black ink to use the color. I could get generic refills for about $3.50 a refill. It was quite nice to be able to print a good amount of documents.

Today with the chips on the cartridges, and the built in heating of the ink on the printer, you can run out of ink quicker that you can blink. And, at about $30 dollars for a refill, it is not cheap to be printing. There are even some printers that will stop working if you do not finish using all your ink by a certain “use by date”.

There are many factors one must consider in purchasing a printer. A big factor should be the cost of ink. Color inkjets can be purchased for about $100, but with ink costing $30 a refill, one should research before buying. Check if the store carries generic refills for the printer in question. Good luck shopping.
